DNR urges caution when burning vegetative debris this fall

October 27, 2015 By Brian Frank

The Department of Natural Resources reminds Minnesotans to be careful this fall when burning vegetative debris.

“In Minnesota, 98 percent of all wildfires are caused by people, and the largest contributor is burning debris like leaves, grass and brush,” said Linda Gormanson, DNR wildfire prevention supervisor.

Burning permits are required to burn vegetative debris when there is less than 3 inches of snow on the ground. Citizens should know the burning restrictions for their county, and check the weather forecast, before lighting a fire. Permits may be restricted when weather conditions allow wildfires to easily spread.

Current information on statewide fire danger and burning restrictions is available on the DNR website at www.mndnr.gov/forestry/fire. Burning permits are available online, from local fire wardens or at DNR forestry offices.

Did you know…….

Did you know…….

July 30, 2015 By Brian Frank

….. that you need a permit from DNR to transport lake weeds to a compost site?

Here’s what you do………..

permitYou will need a DNR permit (See below).

Paynesville Compost Site

The Paynesville Compost Site is located two miles northeast of Paynesville on County Road 33.  The site is open to both city and township of Paynesville citizens. Finished compost is also available for pick-up.

The site is open daily, 8am to dusk from April through mid-November.

Accepted items include yard waste (such as grass clippings), leaves, twigs, branches (no tree stumps), and garden waste.  Finished compost is also available for pick-up.

For details, see the Paynesville MN compost site web page.

You will also need a permit to transfer “weeds” from the lake.  The attached document “ais-auth-form-plants.pdf” (above) that you print out, fill in, and carry with you will cover that requirement.

General Permit 2015-002
One-way Authorization to Transport Aquatic Plants and Prohibited
Invasive Species from Riparian Property to a Disposal Location
(Minnesota Statutes 84D.05 Subd. 1(5) and 84D.11 Subd. 2d)

State rules which will prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

July 30, 2015 By Brian Frank

All the rules can be found in MN Statutes 84D  https://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/statutes/?id=84D

Briefly, any dock, raft or boat lift should be out of the water for 21 days before being put into another body of water.

All boats should be clean of vegetation, mud, debris, mussels, etc., before launching.

When leaving a water body a person must drain water-related equipment holding water and live wells and bilges by removing the drain plug before transporting the water-related equipment.  The boat plug must be pulled out and any water drained during transportation.

It is not inevitable that all our lakes become infested with aquatic invasive species.  They are spread through human action and, if everyone understood and followed the protocols, we could stop the spread.
